Trenton’s Punk Rock Flea Market Gets A Second Home

Add the tiny second home of the year-round Trenton Punk Rock Flea Market to your Black Friday shopping at Trenton Farmers Market as TPRFM organizer Joseph Kuzemka and partner Meaghan Singletary welcome shoppers to their year-round shop Out of Step.

Out of Step is home to a slew of different TPRFM vendors, ranging from specific foods to coffee mugs, vegan candy, books, records, and holiday decorations. “I think every shopper found…a unique gift, but also something they couldn’t refuse,” Singletary said. “So that’s kind of how we look at sales.

The project has been in the works for a little over a year. Since the pandemic, the two have worked tirelessly to bring this new adventure to life. “It’s been a whirlwind, but in the best way,” Kuzemka said. When they opened their doors, a queue was already waiting for them to enter a shop in the new store. It set the tone for the busy, hectic and fulfilling weekend in all the best ways. “You know, it’s in the works, and we’ve been planning this for about a year. So to see it come to life, I think, has been very rewarding, and the feedback we’ve received has been inspiring,” Kuzemka said.

There are different sections to explore throughout the store, including a vintage refrigerator that opens to a wintery wonderland, a wallpaper mural, and a vintage telephone booth with a speaker system welcoming soon-to-be musicians. and local artists. “We wanted people to have certain places in the store where they could discover little things,” Singletary said, “everything here is highly organized, all of our signage and artist items, we wanted people to get to know the items they buy and the manufacturers they buy from.

According to customers, they succeeded. “We go to the flea market in Trenton (Punk Rock) all the time, and that’s how we’ve seen it. We had a free weekend and thought why not take a look,” said Taylor Murphy, a buyer. “It’s cool. I really like it. It’s like my bedroom aesthetic.

As the holiday season approaches, there’s a new thing to watch from Out of Step. “We will also bring in manufacturers to sell here,” Kuzemka said. Starting the first weekend in December, they are hosting a Meet the Maker event at their shop. “People can go out and meet the person who is here. That we also carry their items in the shop, you will be able to buy items from them on the spot.”

But do not worry. It does not replace the TPRFM, it only adds to it. Kuzemka will play a dual role in the next two weeks, Nov. 27 for Small Biz Saturday Shop Small Spectacular and Dec. 11-12 Wreck the Halls event at Cure Insurance Arena.

“So Meaghan and I are going to split the chores,” Kuzemka said. “Where Megan will have help for her in the boutique during the holiday shopping weekends which are going to be very busy. And then all the rest of our team and I will be running the flea markets, but at the end of the day, we’re dealing with a lot of flea market vendors here, so there’s a lot of overlap.

Out of Step is open Wednesday through Sunday each week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Trenton Farmers Market. For more information, check out their Facebook and Instagram at TrentonPunkRockFleaMarket and @Trentonprfm.
